Suits of Armor – Protective clothing for brave knights
Knights are soldiers who rode horses. They were esteemed not only for their fighting power but also as high-ranking members of society from the 11th century. They fought in special armor that was improved over the centuries. First, they had chainmail made of a mesh of interlocking iron rings. In the 14th century, this was upgraded: the entire body was now protected by close-fitting iron plates that protected the knights from sword blows and other attacks.
The Protective Layer
The knights wore thick padding under the heavy armor that protected them from blows from axes, maces, lances, and shields.
The Cap
A padded cap was worn under the helmet to provide extra protection for the head and make the helmet more comfortable.
Quilted Undergarments
The quilted undercoat, also known as gambeson, was made of wool or linen and worn under the armor. It not only provided protection, but also ensured that the armor was not directly touching the skin.
The Boots
Legs and knees were protected by iron legwear that was also part of the armor. These boots helped repel sword blows and enabled the knights to move while in battle.
Thus outfitted, the knights were prepared to go to battle and defend their honor and country. Their armor was not only protection, but also a symbol of their rank and courage.
What’s More
The most exciting competitions were the matches between teams of knights pitted against each other while on their horses. They also engaged in great fights without horses. Many of these clashes were particularly brutal since there were no specific rules and everyone fought for themselves. These contests were often very fierce; the audience was held captive by the suspense and intensity.
